The “Smac” underscores the point that archaeology does not have to mean dusty old relics. The abbreviation stands for Staatliches Museum für Archäologie Chemnitz. It’s not only the exhibition that is exciting, but also the building itself. It used to be the “Kaufhaus Schocken”, a department store, built by the important architect Erich Mendelssohn. In 2016, the Residenz Hotel underwent extensive renovation and redesign. With a new lounge. With pleasantly coloured checkered carpeting in the rooms. And with armchairs and lamps as design objects. Of course, the re-work also included modern bathrooms. When everything was ready, a regular guest appeared with a gift for the hotel. A piece of shower curtain, framed, signed by hand. He said: “The curtain always stuck to my skin when I showered.”
